With 2 boisterous boys – one of them a pre-schooler – it’s a relief not to be holidaying abroad this year.

We’ve done it several times. The airport drama, followed by aeroplane drama, topped off with baggage carousel drama and sweaty coach trip to the hotel drama.

You lose 2 days of your break on travel – and those days are highly stressful.

Which is why this year, we’re looking forward to short breaks away in the UK,  as well as our main holiday in Cornwall.

Some of our favourite memories involve impromptu weekends away to the countryside, or a seaside resort.

And we’re armed with 2 of my favourite inventions of the last century – the in-car DVD player and the Nintendo DS. Both guarantee us a peaceful drive to our destination.

We’ve explored most of Scotland, and enjoyed a lot of time in the Lake District.

We’re ready to try places we’ve never been before.

Mr G has traced his family tree to Cornwall, so we’ll be spending our fortnight’s holiday there.

Other than that, I’m on a mission to find some of the best weekend breaks for families.

Accommodation is a huge part of it for me. My pet hate is a place which offers family rooms – only to produce a double bed, sandwiched between a couple of camp-beds or sofa beds.

It proves the host is keen to make money out of families, but doesn’t care about their comfort.

I mean, you wouldn’t squash yourselves together like that at home, so why should you pay for the privilege when you go away?

Oh, I forgot, because you had children, so you don’t deserve any space!

Mr G and I like to put the kids to bed and have a bit of the evening to ourselves. And you can’t exactly do that when you’re sleeping elbow to elbow next to them.

My favourite places have either had a balcony we could sit out on, while the kids are snoozing in our shared room, or the family accommodation has included a little annex or small side room for the kids.

Who you calling a tree-hugger?

Aside from that, our needs are simple. A park or a beach. A local swimming pool. Something to do in the daytime.

A few nice restaurants nearby. And good weather (but you can’t have everything!)

I’m still researching, but so far the places I’d love to go to include Stratford upon Avon, Brighton, Scarborough, and Llandudno (a resort Mr G used to visit as a boy).

We won’t get around all of them this year, but there’s plenty of time to work through the list – and add more as we go.

Where would you recommend for a family break in the UK?
